Mt. Nokogiri, the Mountain Behind the Town’s Name

Mt. Nokogiri rises along the border between Futtsu City and Kyonan Town, at the western edge of the Kiyosumi mountain range.
Its rugged ridgeline resembles the teeth of a saw, giving the mountain its name, which literally means “saw mountain.” For centuries, its distinctive silhouette served as a landmark for ships entering Tokyo Bay.
Offering panoramic views across the sea and southern Boso, the mountain can be reached by ropeway or car.
Highlights include the Great Buddha of Nihon-ji Temple, one of the largest stone-carved seated Buddhas in Japan, and Jigoku Nozoki, the dramatic “View into Hell” lookout.
